Here grows New York

5th Avenue with yellow cabs in NYC.

Fewer than 300 people lived in New Amsterdam when the first dutch families came in 1624.

This great animation from Myles Zhang illustrates the development of New York City’s street grid and infrastructure systems from 1609 to the present-day.

The creator uses geo-referenced road network data and historic maps. The resulting short film presents a series of “cartographic snapshots” of NYC’s built-up urban area at intervals of every 20-30 years history.

Elwyn Brooks White, 1946
